Vjetrenica Cave as a tourist hotspot

Unique geological formation

Vjetrenica (pronounced vye-tre-nee-tza) is a karst cave known for its intricate network of tunnels and chambers spanning over 7 kilometers. Almost 2 kilometers are groomed hiking trails.

Formed primarily from limestone, the cave features stunning formations of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and draperies. Furthermore, the cave is hydrologically active and flaunts several water streams and underground lakes. Thanks to this, the cave was categorized as a special geological reserve in 1965. It has also been a protected natural monument since 1952.

Almost half of the species residing in the cave are troglobites and many of them are endemic to some degree. Moreover, 37 species were actually discovered and described in Vjetrenica Cave for the first time.

Perhaps the most compelling is the blind aquatic salamander, Proteus anguinus or “olm.” This fascinating animal captivates visitors with its pale, almost translucent skin and its ability to thrive in total darkness.
